As I walked from Covent Garden to Waterloo this evening the air was warm and I kept seeing beautiful snippets of light everywhere as if I was in a Philip Lorca Di Corcia picture x

POP FLASH Collectable photographs by
BEN BUCHANAN AND JACKIE KING
New York in the 1980s was the last exciting decade in NY. For three brief but memorable years the worlds of art and fashion, music and film, collided four times a week at the downtown Manhattan nightclub Area. English / USA photographer Ben Bunchanan was there every night to record what went on at the club, famed for its elaborate and extravagant ever-changing themes such as Suburbia, Sex and Sci-Fi. "They would shut down on a Sunday night and reopen four days and $50,000 later with a whole new look," There are icons of New York nightlife like Andy Warhol and David Hockney along side young protégés like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who made their names working on Area's regular refits. By 1987 Area had gone, and the bohemian neighborhood where Ben had shot so many local artists and musicians would soon be gentrified and rebranded as TriBeCa. But the spirit of the age lives on in the photos of the people who put Downtown on the map.

Fascinated by pop Art of 80's and celebrity culture Jackie has an intuitive approach to colour and vernacular in her image making. She creates a performative series of coloured photographs depicting herself in mesmerizing landscapes and transformed her portraits into a celebrity persona ......echoing the 80's celebrity culture.
Photography isn't about being serious all the time or using the best equipment - it's about play too. This morning I grabbed my Instax instant camera as I headed out to early morning yoga and in my mind I simply wanted to take a 'shot of the day' if I was lucky or one picture with my instant camera which would inject some fun in to my morning and make me smile.
As I drove to yoga I considered the mist rising off the fields and a tree lined road but nothing grabbed me long enough. Then as I left yoga I suddenly thought - what about a colour, as much of one colour as possible or just look out for the colour 'RED". As I made my way out of the car park, there, right in front of me was a bright red facial so out of my (red) car i popped and incorporated the car into the image.
It's not ground breaking or award winning BUT it is play, it's loosening me up, it's getting me to connect and to see in the moment knowing I have one shot, knowing that I will wait a few moments with eager anticipation as to what will emerge slowly as the image clears + that, at 8am on a Tuesday morning is kinda fun, playful and made me smile.
It's all a process.
(a little sunshine inspiration picture from our session on Sunday morning - utterly adorable and so cheeky!!)

Up little noses, cheeks, eyebrows, legs lol everywhere! + What fun getting to create such a special Birthday photo session. Mummy Emma baked the cake + had a really great vision for how she wanted it to look, including the FAB T-shirt with silver '1' on the front, the bunting + crown were awesome touches too + made this a super family occasion. x
Amongst the busyness of life and work, it's so lovely to stop and enjoy Spring, blossom, fresh air + sunshine. Yesterday was such a day when I appreciated open space and nature after a fun photo session and jam packed day it was wonderful + slightly necessary to step outside and smile at nature carrying on and doing her thing :-) Three things I'm grateful for: my magnolia, sunshine, fresh air :-) xx
Super cuteness alert! I was so thrilled when one of my amazing clients got in touch before Xmas to purchase a photo session as a gift for her brother + sister in law and their new arrival. Just down the road from my studio in Crystal Palace I met Mila and we had such fun! She was the cutest little bean and just a few days young.
I always find it more comfortable to visit my clients for newborn sessions so everything is familiar, comfortable and to hand + I was super delighted when I received a wonderful 'Thank you' email from Marta and incredible review of our session <3 xx
Thank you so much MNM :-) xx excited to watch your family grow xx
I'm just so thrilled to share this blog post from the amazing Flytographer website! This was such a fun proposal to capture for Flytographer and these two wonderful ladies. Deep in the gorgeous Hampshire countryside, intrepid adventures armed with their cameras and a great sense of humour last week explored their locale as we got to grips with our F-stops, shutter speed, ISO + the ingredients which go in to creating a photograph.
Cris + Nelly were super students as we spent the day improving skills and enjoying "Haleluya" moments :-) AND we got to work amongst a super beautiful setting with amazing details and plants!!
Sometimes it's reconnecting the dots + allowing ourselves some space + time to reconnect with the process + then the craft of using our cameras, our eyes + thinking in a different way. Sometimes it's concentrating on what's right in front of us without distraction + allowing our subconscious to feel - "I know this! I know this...Ahh I got it" OR "ahh thats how it works!!" (Even if that process can feel like walking throughtreacle)
Cris created this awesome video below of some of her footage and pictures from our day + I just love it, so please take a peek! She's very clever!
With Cris + Nelly we tailored the day specifically to their experience, level + aims for the day + all my photo workshops are tailored to each student and more often than not the handbook that accompanies a new camera or old camera that's being rediscovered, feels like it's written in gobbledygooke and until you get out there in the field/city/beach (delete as appropriate) the bits don't quite fit together.
Each location I teach in provides different gems and different challenges and is really exciting as we work our way through picture taking and the recipe involved in enabling us a greater understanding of our camera + pushing us out of our comfort zone + through boundaries.
I even managed to sneak a few pictures from our workshop below! :-) Enjoy xx
This morning the amazing #Ladiesfirstcroydon exhibition opened in Croydon and there was a buzz throughout the building!!!
